Why does the Pope think he's infallible?

I went to dinner with some friends recently, and during dinner, the conversation turned to the Pope. "Why do Catholics, and the Pope think he's infallible, " they asked, while rolling their eyes. They didn't realize I was Catholic (these are new friends). I hear this question occasionally, and it's usually phrased the way I titled this thread.

I didn't say anything to my friends, and the conversation drifted to something else...BUT...how do you answer such a large question, in a brief and timely manner.

The quick answer to your question is they don't. The teaching is that the Church was given the charism of infallibility in order to preserve the teachings given to the apostles by Jesus. Jesus in an act to preserve the truth within his Church endowed the Church with a share of his infallibility (CCC889). The New Testament tells of Christ's decision to set up a visible, hierarchical, and teaching Church giving authority to the apostles and their successors. Please read Mt 28:18-20, Mt 18:18, Luke 10:16, and Jn 16:13.

Please read the bible passages I posted. In addition, it is important to understand that the Church, with the Pope as its earthly head, is the living body of Christ and is infallible in teaching on faith and morals. In other words the Pope is not infallible as a person but as the head of Christ's Infallible Church.

Does anyone use this forum?  The infallibility of the pope is a dogma declared at the First Vatican Council.  Anytime he is teaching the Church he is infallible in his teachings.

Apostolic Succession

The Early Fathers believed that authentic teaching and authority came through apostolic succession. Christ conferred authority on the apostles who in turn conferred it upon their successors. We see examples of this in Scripture when the apostle Paul ordains Timothy and Titus.

Clement of Rome

Our Apostles knew through our Lord Jesus Christ that there would be strife for the office of bishop. For this reason, therefore, having received perfect foreknowledge, they appointed those who have already been mentioned, and afterwards added the further provision that, if they should die, other approved men should succeed to their ministry (Letter to the Corinthians 44:1 [A.D. 95]).

Ignatius of Antioch

You must all follow the bishop as Jesus Christ follows the Father, and the presbytery as you would the Apostles. Reverence the deacons as you would the command of God. Tertullian

Clement of Alexandria

After the death of the tyrant, the [Apostle John] came back again to Ephesus from the Island of Patmos; and, upon being invited, he went even to the neighboring cities of the pagans, here to appoint bishops, there to set in order whole Churches, and there to ordain to the clerical estate such as were designated by the Spirit (Who is the Rich Man that is Saved? 42:2 [A.D. 200]).

Firmilion of Caesarea
